    La campagna di rilevamento dei danni sismici sui beni archeologici compresi nel territorio del "cratere sismico" ha evidenziato una serie di risultati che possono considerarsi esemplificativi delle tipologie di danneggiamento verificatesi su tale patrimonio, di per sé molto vario sia per quanto riguarda le tipologie e le tecniche costruttive, sia per quanto riguarda i materiali, lo stato di conservazione e la consistenza stessa dei reperti. Tali testimonianze sono costituite talvolta da siti archeologici di notevole interesse e notorietà, talvolta da ritrovamenti di minore entità in luoghi ancora da esplorare. L'ambito cronologico è molto ampio, trattandosi sia di aree archeologiche vere e proprie, sia di manufatti allo stato di rudere (resti di fortificazioni, recinti, torri ecc.). In alcuni casi si tratta di costruzioni rilevanti, il cui comportamento statico-strutturale può essere analizzato con metodologie analoghe a quelle utilizzate per il rilievo del danno sui beni architettonici; in altri casi, tuttavia, più che riferirsi a un abaco predefinito di macroelementi strutturali e di meccanismi di collasso, appare utile rifarsi alla statica dei singoli elementi architettonici. In particolare, il rilievo dei danni sismici, condotto in siti archeologici le cui strutture residue sono costituite da resti murari di altezza ridotta, soggetti al solo peso proprio, ha evidenziato che i danni possono manifestarsi indipendentemente dalle condizioni di vulnerabilità derivanti dalla snellezza, dalle situazioni di vincolo, dalle interazioni con le strutture adiacenti, ecc. In linea generale si possono evidenziare differenti casistiche di danneggiamento sulle strutture archeologiche indagate, di cui si presentano alcuni casi esemplificativi.

    The observation of seismic damages to archaeological sites after the 2009 earthquake in Abruzzo (Italy) has been conducted by the Regional Directorate for Cultural Heritage and by the CNR-ITC of L'Aquila, in order to test a specific form for surveying the seismic damage and the archaeological heritage vulnerability. During the survey activity it has been possible to observe not only the damages caused by the earthquake, but also the conservation status of the sites. A particularly interesting aspect was the opportunity to verify the effects of the former restoration works: the materials used have often proved to be incompatible, both from the mechanical and from the physical-chemical point of view. The use of inadequate materials has intensified the degradation of ancient materials (erosion and salt crystallization) and it has caused a concentration of seismic damages near the restored areas. Those areas with a greater rigidity have almost entirely detached from old parts, causing damage to them. Four years after the earthquake further surveys have been carried out on a few sites that were particularly critical conditions, in order to check the decay evolution. Among these, the amphitheater of Amiternum shows a collection of inappropriate interventions which it is useful to consider in view of future restorations.

    An extensive and up-to-date investigation of the needs and expectations of European and Mediterranean mueseums and archaelogical historical sites was carried out in the framwork of both international EU and Italian projects. The assessment of the results clearly evidenced a lack of reliable and long term efficient safe materials and methods for the conservation of metals in the Mediterranean basin, where the wealth of cultural property has a major impact on tourism. The chemical composition and metallurgical features of a large number of archaeological metallic artefacts were investigated by different analytical surface and bulk techniques for the indentification of degradation agents and mecchanisms. The production of reference copper and silver-based alloys was the first step of an original experimental protocol to be used in the field of conservation of metal artefacts. These modern alloys can be used both as sacrifical substrates for testing new materials and methods for conservation and also as reference specimens for monitoring museum microclimate.

    Instrumental to the concept of sustainability must be the search for feasible ways to implement sustainability, especially connecting heritage and tourism. This should be understood in relationship with the persistence in time and the current and future conception of the human-made environment. This study deals with the spatial characterization over time of the urban sprawl close to and around two important archaeological areas: Kom el Shoqafa, Egypt and Shush, Iran. For both of the investigated sites, change detection analyses have been conducted using satellite declassified Corona and multidate Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery available for free from the USGS Earth Explorer. The study involves the collection of Corona 1964, Landsat TM 1984, Landsat ETM+ 1998 and L8 2016. The past and current urban and agricultural areas have been extracted by using consolidated classification techniques. Analyses and quantification of the spatial dimension of the urban expansion showed that, for both the study sites, urban areas have expanded to a significant percentage. In particular, the analysis of Corona and Landsat TM, ETM+, L8 imagery in Kom el Shoqafa revealed that, for the urban area, the evaluation of the change detection presented generally increasing chronology in both of the study areas, but for the agriculture lands, we can see that the changes sometimes decreased and sometimes increased. As a whole, outputs from our investigations clearly highlight that the current availability free of charge of long term satellite time series provides an excellent low cost tool for several applications including environmental monitoring and change detection to observe and quantify urban and land use changes from a global down to a local scale. We examine the capabilities of integrating remote sensing and GIS and suggest some innovative solutions to preserve the archaeological sites.

    The observation of seismic damages to archaeological sites after the 2009 earthquake in Abruzzo (Italy) has been conducted by the Regional Directorate for Cultural Heritage and by the CNR-ITC of L'Aquila, in order to test a specific form for surveying the seismic damage and the archaeological heritage vulnerability. During the survey activity it has been possible to observe not only the damages caused by the earthquake, but also the conservation status of the sites. A particularly interesting aspect was the opportunity to verify the effects of the former restoration works: the materials used have often proved to be incompatible, both from the mechanical and from the physical-chemical point of view. The use of inadequate materials has intensified the degradation of ancient materials (erosion and salt crystallization) and it has caused a concentration of seismic damages near the restored areas. Those areas with a greater rigidity have almost entirely detached from old parts, causing damage to them. Four years after the earthquake further surveys have been carried out on a few sites that were particularly critical conditions, in order to check the decay evolution. Among these, the amphitheater of Amiternum shows a collection of inappropriate interventions which it is useful to consider in view of future restorations.

    An extensive and up-to-date investigation of the needs and expectations of European and Mediterranean mueseums and archaelogical historical sites was carried out in the framwork of both international EU and Italian projects. The assessment of the results clearly evidenced a lack of reliable and long term efficient safe materials and methods for the conservation of metals in the Mediterranean basin, where the wealth of cultural property has a major impact on tourism. The chemical composition and metallurgical features of a large number of archaeological metallic artefacts were investigated by different analytical surface and bulk techniques for the indentification of degradation agents and mecchanisms. The production of reference copper and silver-based alloys was the first step of an original experimental protocol to be used in the field of conservation of metal artefacts. These modern alloys can be used both as sacrifical substrates for testing new materials and methods for conservation and also as reference specimens for monitoring museum microclimate.

    Instrumental to the concept of sustainability must be the search for feasible ways to implement sustainability, especially connecting heritage and tourism. This should be understood in relationship with the persistence in time and the current and future conception of the human-made environment. This study deals with the spatial characterization over time of the urban sprawl close to and around two important archaeological areas: Kom el Shoqafa, Egypt and Shush, Iran. For both of the investigated sites, change detection analyses have been conducted using satellite declassified Corona and multidate Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery available for free from the USGS Earth Explorer. The study involves the collection of Corona 1964, Landsat TM 1984, Landsat ETM+ 1998 and L8 2016. The past and current urban and agricultural areas have been extracted by using consolidated classification techniques. Analyses and quantification of the spatial dimension of the urban expansion showed that, for both the study sites, urban areas have expanded to a significant percentage. In particular, the analysis of Corona and Landsat TM, ETM+, L8 imagery in Kom el Shoqafa revealed that, for the urban area, the evaluation of the change detection presented generally increasing chronology in both of the study areas, but for the agriculture lands, we can see that the changes sometimes decreased and sometimes increased. As a whole, outputs from our investigations clearly highlight that the current availability free of charge of long term satellite time series provides an excellent low cost tool for several applications including environmental monitoring and change detection to observe and quantify urban and land use changes from a global down to a local scale. We examine the capabilities of integrating remote sensing and GIS and suggest some innovative solutions to preserve the archaeological sites.
