This document describes the objectives of the ARCHLAB transnational access program and the activities that have been carried out during the first period (M1-27) of the Iperion HS project. In particular, the deliverable reports on the archives of the various institutions that are opened for the service, on the initiatives that have been taken to diffuse information on the ARCHLAB opportunities offered to users, and on the various steps that led to the activation of the service consisting of announcement of calls for proposals, projects’ selection by peer review, and exploitations of the ARCHLAB infrastructure. Finally, this deliverable was carried out with some partners of the consortium of WP2 and describes in more detail the projects implemented, the days of access, the objectives of the visits and the results achieved during the visits.

Scientific data that are created, stored, or distributed in digital form are at risk of being unavailable or unusable for future research if they are not managed to mitigate the risks of digital data. At CIESIN, the Center for International Earth Science Information Network, of Columbia University, we have identified and described several risks to scientific data, including legality, integrity, interpretability, accessibility, discoverability, security, confidentiality, recoverability, and sustainability. Questions, scenarios, and approaches for mitigating these risks to scientific are offered.

The digital revolution has vastly increased the ability of the scientific community to collect and store a tremendous variety and quantity of data in digital form, representing a potentially irreplaceable legacy that can support scientific discovery and scholarship in both the present and the future. However, it is not yet clear what organizations or institutions can and should maintain and store such data, ensuring their long-term integrity and usability, nor how such longterm stewardship should be funded and supported. Many traditional information preservation and access institutions such as libraries and museums are struggling to develop the skills, resources, and infrastructure needed for large scale, long-term digital data stewardship. Government agencies often have strong technical capabilities, but are subject to political and budgetary pressures and competing priorities. Private organizations and companies can bring to bear innovations not only in technology but also in economic approaches that could provide financial sustainability. Developing long-term collaborative partnerships between different types of organizations may be one approach to developing sustainable models for long-term data stewardship. The development of objective criteria and open standards for trusted digital data repositories is another important step towards sustainable data stewardship. A critical challenge is the development of viable economic models for ensuring that the resources needed for long-term stewardship are put in place, while at the same time addressing the needs of the scientific community and society more generally for open access to scientific data and information resources. The development of a robust spatial data infrastructure can not only help reduce both the short- and long-term costs of data stewardship, but also provide a framework for the establishment and evolution of trustworthy data repositories that will be available for future generations of users to discover, access, and use the scientific heritage that is being created today.

Abstract Social appropriation of knowledge is a theme of recent concern by scientific communities, governments and mass media and it is assumed as a commitment to the community. This article aims to contribute to the theme from the archives. First: as social appropriation places of the socio-cultural knowledge through the retrieval of memory for the construction of identity and citizenship. Second: as information units supporting social appropriation processes of the scientific-technological knowledge, by the implementation of scientific archives in new environments like the virtual and the digital.

From 2009 to 2013, steered by Bruno Brunetti, a European project was developed to set up research infrastructures in the field of heritage conservation and restoration: it is called CHARISMA (Cultural Heritage Advanced Research Infrastructures). This paper draws up a short summary of its achievements, highlighting the innovations made, namely the development of mobile analytical devices and the opportunity to consult the scientific archives of the institutions participating in the project via the ARCHLAB transnational access programme. Lastly, it briefly assesses the impact made by the research undertaken.

Data Repositories (RD) guarantee the principles of transparency and offer a secure storage system, in addition to the possibility of having research data available online, indexed, documented, to be accessed, downloaded, viewed and processed by people or by systems, extending it to a wider and networked community. The objective of this research is to present the contributions provided by the use of RD Dataverse to promote efficiency in scientific communication. This is a qualitative, descriptive and bibliographic research in which we sought to identify relationships between the bibliographic content on scientific communication, data and data repositories and informational content on the RD Dataverse contained in the sites The Dataverse Project ”- presentation site of the Dataverse - and “Harvard Dataverse. The results demonstrate the functionality of Dataverse has relations with aspects that benefit scientific communication, among which can be mentioned: preservation of scientific data, production of quality metadata, promotion of ease in processes of retrieval of scientific information, availability of data that can be cited, among other issues. Therefore, it is concluded that the Dataverse provides benefits that are associated with the communication processes between scientific researchers.
